The Department was organized at the same time as the institute in 1926 and is considered the oldest one. At first it was a virological department which main task was fighting trachoma. Then it was restructured over the years - the development of production in the country and the improvement of knowledge in the field of ophthalmology had set new tasks.

Currently the 3d microsurgical department is a multidisciplinary clinical unit of 60 beds, with the latest diagnostic, laser and microsurgical equipment which works closely with other parts of the Institute and doctors of other clinics and specialties (ENT specialists, maxillofacial surgeons, neurosurgeons, traumatologists, neurologists, endocrinologists, etc.).


Every year the Department provide treatment for more than 2,000 people and every year the number of surgeries increases. 3 years ago the surgical activity of Department was no more than 35%, in the present time it has grown considerably and equals 70%.

3d microsurgical Department is a scientific and practical ophthalmological centre of Bashkortostan providing specialized care to patients with eye injuries, infectious and inflammatory eye diseases.

Eye trauma is a significant social and economic problem. Since 2003 injuries and their consequences firmly hold the 6th place among reasons of primary vision disablement. More than 90% of patients who for the first time have been recognized as disabled due to eye injuries are people of working age, over 80% of them are male, over 70% of them have got a penetrating wound of the eyeball.

The outcome of penetrating wound and the chances of the surgical patient to return to normal life and work significantly depend on the quality and timeliness of surgery carrying out.

Primary surgical debridement is already inadequate in the light of the modern concepts of the pathogenesis of penetrating wounds of an eyeball. At the present time more progressive is single-step adequate surgical debridement of injuries. It is an approach wherein not only the wound getting sealed, stops bleeding and post-traumatic complications prevented, but also, where possible, ensured transparency of the optical path, removed traumatic cataract and implanted an intraocular lens, restored all damaged structures of the eye. All of this requires highly skilled doctors, availability of appropriate diagnostic equipment and modern operating suites.
