Children's Microsurgical Department

Development of treatment for children with eye disorders is one of the leading activities of Ufa Eye Research Institute. The Children’s Microsurgical Department is one of the oldest in the Ufa Research Institute of Eye Diseases: it was organized in 1932, just a few years after the establishment of the Institute. The Department provides surgical treatment for children from all over Russia and abroad. In recent years under the guidance of Professor M.M.Bikbov new techniques of cataract surgery are developed and implemented including cases of lens subluxation.

Currently Children’s Microsurgical Department is equipped with the most advanced diagnostic and medical equipment of leading world manufacturers. In our department the following procedures are carried out:

  • cataract surgery, even in newborn period, with implantation of IOL or contact lens fitting;

Technologies developed in the Department allow performing surgeries in first weeks of life with flexible IOL implantation.

In 5 years after the surgery visual acuity of both eyes is 0.3.-0.4 with no additional correction and 0.5.-0.7 with additional correction +1.5 D

  • Intraocular correction of aphakia in nursing infants with persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous. 
Infant, 11 months old, right eye- microcornea, posterior  persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous , functioning hyaloid artery. Phacoaspiration with intracapsular implantation of flexible IOL and removal of persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous  and anterior vitrectomy.
The same infant in 4 years after the surgery. Uncorrected vision acuity is 0.2, with correction 2.0 D – 0.5.

  • Implantation of IOLs in aphakia and lens subluxation.The Department for the first time ever developed a new technique of IOL fixation allowing to perform aphakia correction in the absence of lens of its disorders. Dislocation of IOL in long-term period was not detected in any of cases.  
  • Combined intracapsular fixation of flexible IOL with intrascleral fixation of one of the arms in lens subluxation.

Stages of combined intrascleral intracapsular fixation of flexible IOL

  • Implantation of toric IOLs
In children after phaco with IOL implantation astigmatism is quite common what requires prescription of additional spectacle or excimerlaser vision correction. 

The best option is to perform phaco aspiration and implantation of toric IOL allowing compensation of corneal astigmatism even during operation.

We have developed a technique for implantation of toric IOLs in children with cataract combined with corneal astigmatism. Initially marking of the axis position of the IOL is made by laser.

In the operating room after the implantation of toric IOLs, the axis position is exposed to laser coagulate.

  • Femtolaser cataract surgery in children on newest femtosecond laser system VICTUS (Germany) which allows to perform operations on lens. Software CUSTOMLENS can perform execution of capsulorhexis, tunnel section and sections for paracentesis,  nuclear fragmentation, providing  individual approach, simplifying the technique and reducing time of the surgery;

  • Surgery for congenital and secondary glaucoma: the implantation of drainage and the use of anti-proliferative drugs; 
  • Refractive surgeries for unilateral myopia and high degree hyperopia, including laser correction, penetrating and lamellar keratoplasty in  scarring and corneal opacity; 
  • Reconstructive surgery for eye trauma;
  • Surgical treatment of strabismus, progressive myopia and blepharoptosis;
  • Plastic surgery for defects and deformations of eyelids and orbit; 
  • Surgical treatment of acute inflammatory diseases of eyelids and orbit; 
  • Surgical treatment of lacrimal system pathology (laser dacryocystorhinostomy); 
  • Plastic surgery for scarring, inflammatory and congenital   defects of appendages of the eye, phthisis bulbi.
