Department of Functional Diagnostics was founded in 1974 on the basis of the room for electrophysiological study.
The department is equipped with advanced diagnostic tools necessary for diagnosis, prognosis and monitoring of eye diseases progression and evaluation of treatment outcomes.

 High-precision diagnosis of eye diseases are carried out due to computer technologies:

  •  Laser scanning tomography by retina tomograph HRT-III (HeidelbergEngineering, Germany);
  • Visualization of anterior segment structures by optical coherent tomography (VisanteOCT, CarlZeiss, Germany);
  • Calculation of intraocular lens power using «IOL MASTER» (Carl Zeiss, Germany);
  • Computer perimetry using unit Dicon LD (USA);
  •  Visualization of posterior segment structures by optical coherence tomography (Visante Stratus, Carl Zeiss, Germany);
  • A /B - scan of anterior and posterior eye segments, ultrasound biomicroscopy (HiScan OPTIKON, Italy);
  •  Measurement of true intraocular pressure in view of the biomechanical properties of the cornea (Ocular Response Analyzer, Reichert, USA).

The following examinations are carried out:

  • examination of intraocular pressure - non-contact tonometry (noncontact tonometer Topcon, Nidek, Japan
  • Keratorefractometry (autorefkeratometer NRK-7000, South Korea).

3 doctors and 6 nurses work in the Department.
Every year 263589 examinations are carried out for 38166 patients.

Anterior Segment Optical Coherent Tomograph Visante OCT (Carl Zeiss). This OCT provides a cross-section of anterior chamber in 4 meridians, allows to analyze the depth of anterior chamber angle, determine the degree of corneal ectasia and evaluate pachymetry cards.
  • High resolution;
  • High accuracy;
  • Non-contact procedure;
  • The procedure can be conducted in cloudy cornea.
IOL_MASTER (Carl Zeiss, Germany) is a combined biometric device for measuring length of the axis, radius of corneal curvature, depth of anterior chamber required for calculation of an implanted intraocular lens before cataract surgery. All measurements are carried out by non-contact method what is very comfort for the patient.

Optical coherence tomograph OCT Stratus 3000 by Carl Zeiss is intended for the study of posterior eye segment. This high-resolution scanner is designed for examination and display of cross-sections of posterior segment of eye structures. Spectral OCT significantly extends the capabilities of diagnosis of retina and optic nerve pathology providing an in-depth intravital analysis of fundus changes.

Heidelberg Retina Tomograph with "cornea» complex HRT-3 (HRT-III, Heidelberg Engineering, Germany) is designed for visualization and analysis of three-dimensional images of posterior eye segment.
HRT-3 is used for:
  • measurement of spatial form of the optic disc and automatic evaluation of aberration (the "Glaucoma" program);
  • construction of retina thickness chart in macular region and objective detection of macular edema ("Macula" program);
  • monitoring of all layers of the cornea, quantitation of endothelial and epithelial cells density ("Cornea" program).

Pneumotonomter (TOMEY FT-1000, Japan) allows a quick and non-contact determination of intraocular pressure. The measurement is carried out using a compressed air jet. It takes a split second and does not require pre-anestheia.

Computer perimetry (Dicon LD 400, USA). This method is used to determine the visual sensitivity and detection of vision field loss due to glaucoma at an early stage, macular degeneration, chorioretinitis, and partial optic atrophy. The device provides fast and accurate research results and the procedure is comfortable for the patient. It also provides advanced features for results interpretation. Fast mode reduces the threshold sensitivity of the test by 40%.
фото3 нии.jpgAuto-Ref-Keratometer (Huvitz NRK-7000, Korea) is intended for determining refraction and corneal curvature. Fully automatic control unit with a joystick provides the convenience for the patient and the doctor.
Analyzer of Biomechanical Eye Properties  Ocular Response Analyzer (ORA).
This device is intended for measurement of true IOP considering corneal biomechanical properties.
Main features of device are:
Usage of new parameters in glaucoma diagnosis (to establish correlations between intraocular pressure (IOP) measurements obtained with the ocular response analyzer (ORA) and the Goldmann applanation tonometer – IOPg: corneal hysteresis characterizing visco-elastic properties of the cornea - CH; corneal-compensated intraocular pressure taking into account visco-elastic properties of the cornea - IOPcc; cornea resistance factors characterizing total resistance of the cornea, which would have existed at zero IOP - CRF);
Simple push-button control and full automatic adjustment.

A-Scan biometry is performed for measurement of optic axis in immersion; before and after LASIK surgery; the software guarantees differentiated measurements for pseudophakic eyes depending on the different lens types.
B-Scan probe allows acquisition of detailed images of the posterior segment and especially the vitreous and the orbit.
